Drop-Seat Pajamas: The White Elephant Gift That Wins Every Year

Two adults in red plaid and navy drop-seat pajama pants on a couch on Christmas morning

Every white elephant exchange has one gift that gets stolen three times. Some years it's the margarita machine. Most years, in our experience, it's a pair of drop-seat pajamas: soft fleece lounge pants with a buttoned flap over the backside, printed with something ridiculous. They cost less than the usual $25 limit, they photograph well, and nobody can keep a straight face when the flap comes down.

Here's why they work, how to pick a design, and how to get the size right so the joke actually gets worn.

What are drop-seat pajamas, exactly?

Drop-seat pajamas (also called butt-flap pajamas, trap-door pajamas, or cheeky lounge pants) are based on the old union suits from the 1800s, when a buttoned rear flap was a practical feature on one-piece long underwear. Today the flap is pure comedy. Modern versions are two-piece lounge pants in brushed fleece, with an elastic waist, a drawstring, and two or three buttons holding the flap closed. Open the buttons and you get the reveal; close them and they're just very warm pajama pants.

Ours come in unisex sizing from S to 3XL, so they fit the dad, the brother-in-law, and the college kid equally well.

Why they beat every other gag gift

  • They're actually useful. Most gag gifts end up in a drawer by New Year's. Fleece lounge pants get worn all winter, which means the joke keeps going every time they walk into the kitchen.
  • They fit the budget. Under $30 lands inside almost every office and family gift-exchange limit.
  • They're a guaranteed photo. Whoever unwraps them will be asked to "show the back." That picture ends up in the family group chat for years.
  • One size range covers everyone. You don't need to know the recipient's exact measurements, which matters when the gift is anonymous.

Picking the right design

Christmas morning: go festive and obvious. Naughty List Fair Isle and Santa Ho Ho Ho read as classic holiday pajamas until the flap drops. Candy cane stripes and Tangled Lights match the rest of the family's matching-PJ photo, with a twist.

Year-round gag: if the exchange isn't Christmas-themed, or the recipient will wear them past December, pick something that doesn't date. Kiss My navy is the plainest at a glance and the biggest laugh when turned around. Green buffalo plaid works for cabin weekends and the lumberjack dads in your life.

Halloween: the Boo-ty ghost print is the one people quote back to us. Black cat, skull, and jack-o'-lantern versions cover the rest of October.

Sizing: how to buy for someone else

Drop-seat pants are meant to sit loose. When in doubt, size up; a slightly roomy pair still looks right and is more comfortable for lounging. As a rough guide, S fits a 28–30 inch waist, M 31–33, L 34–36, XL 37–39, 2XL 40–42, and 3XL 43–45. The full chart is on every product page. If the gift is anonymous and you have no idea, L or XL covers the majority of adults.

Care

Machine wash cold, tumble dry low, and button the flap before washing so the buttons don't catch on other laundry. Fleece holds up well to repeat washing; just skip fabric softener, which flattens the nap over time.

Ordering in time for the holidays

Everything in our Cheeky Holiday Pajamas collection ships from our US warehouse. Allow 1–3 business days of processing plus 7–10 business days of delivery, so for a Christmas exchange, order by early December to be safe. Orders of $65 or more ship free, which usually means two pairs, and two pairs is how most people end up buying them: one for the exchange and one for the house.
